Event: Artistic freedom, development & tolerance
We would like to invite you to a cultural event in Nijmegen on the role of art and culture in developing world on the 12the of December 2009,
Ilays, redsea-online and Kayd have organised the first cultural festival in Somaliland, Mooge Festival and Hargeysa International Book Fair, 22 -27 July 2009. The key question of the festival was whether Art and Culture can contribute to the creation of tolerance. At this event we want to showcase a documentary film and discuss with the Somali communities, NGO’s working with and for Somali communities and the artists them self whether art can be use as a tool for social chances.
Mooge festival was sponsored by: Novib, Ambassador Hotel Hargeysa, Pressnow, UNDP, British embassy, Daalo airlines, Dahabshiil, Sorag and Somaliland Telecom. The festival was supported by Somaliland youth organisations: Sonyo, Havoyoco, Murtimaal, Somaliland readers clubs and Socsa.
Our idea for the Festival and Book Fair was to promote the culture of reading, writing and to contribute to culture of tolerance through a broad combination of writing, poetry, literature, music, film and discussions. The Festival is named after the celebrated Somali musician Mohamed Mooge.
Whilst the festival programming was aimed to celebrate artists and celebrate freedom of expression, creativity and discuss the important role that art can play within society in general, it was also explore how the artists have experienced acts of censorship. Some of the topics that have looked at were whether acts of censorship were experienced differently by different artists and the roll of free media to development! Whether the artists and writers with the help of hindsight, now think that they should have made other choices at the time.
We want to share our experience and the outcomes from the Mooge festival & HIBF book fair by showing a short film. The second part of the event will be a round table discussion on “whether and how Art can contribute to development and creation of tolerance.”
Key speakers are Jama Musse Jama, writer and the Director of redsea-online, Qader Shafiq, policy maker of COS, Lenie Scholten, executive of the Nijmegen Local government with responsibility diversity, youth and asylum and Dick the Ruijter, project leader of several art & diversity projects in the Netherlands.
